Pentax 200mm

Get Pentax 200mm

The Pentax 200mm f/2.8 is perhaps the most awaited and anticipated lens among the Pentax users. You can get the best price from Amazon. B&H Photo and Adorama also have it in stock.

This is the most awaited glass because Pentaxians had to rely on third party brand for quality telephoto zoom lens. They only offered the 55-200mm for a long time and Pentaxians have no choice but to stick to it or buy a third party brand instead.

Thankfully, they would not need to do that again with the release of this 200mm glass.

Both the construction quality and the optical quality look very promising on paper.

Which is why I was very eager to test out this piece of instrument.

Let’s see if this Pentax 200mm matches people’s expecation on my review below.

Build Quality

Back to: MenuIntroduction

Materials

This is a professional made instrument from solid metal parts. It has dust and moisture seal. Also, the SP (Super Protect) element has been optimized to repel water, dust and grease.

Focusing

The focusing ring is very smooth. A great feature on this here is the IF (Internal Focusing) mechanism which keeps the dimension constant during focusing.

The autofocusing uses the new SDM (Supersonic Dynamic Motor) which is similar to Canon’s USM or Nikon’s SWD mechanism. This makes the autofocusing mechanism silent and fast. Accuracy is dead on.

You can switch from autofocus to manual focus easily via the Quick Shift system here.

If you are using a pre-SDM SLR or DSLR, this lens features the old drive screw autofocus so you can use it with them with no problem.

Image Stabilization

The Image Stabilization feature is installed in the camera body, not on the lenses. Check your DSLR camera if it has Image Stabilization feature.

Compatibility

The DA designation means that it is only compatible with cropped sensor DSLR. It should not be used with a full frame DSLR or 35mm film SLR camera.

Conclusion

Back to: MenuIntroduction

In this section, I will conclude my Pentax 200mm review.

Both the center and border sharpness are great here. Even at f/2.8 (the widest aperture) it is very sharp.

Chromatic aberration and distortion can be considered non-existent here. Vignetting is also extremely well controlled (although slightly visible at f/2.8).

Build quality is superb. It is made of metal and has excellent dust and moisture seal.

Focusing is another great aspect here. It is very fast, silent and accurate.

All those things are well and good.

However, there is one downside on this lens and that is price.

For a cropped sensor DSLR glass, this glass is by no means a cheap one.

It is expensive, but for the quality that you get, it is well worth it.

Drawbacks

  • Expensive
  • Slightly visible vignetting at f/2.8

Positives

  • Great sharpness on the center and borders at any aperture
  • Distortion is non-existent
  • Negligible chromatic aberration
  • Superb build quality with dust and moisture seal
  • Fast, silent and accurate autofocus mechanism

Good For

  • Portraiture
  • Sports photography
  • Wildlife photography

Not So Good For

  • Walk around lens – it is heavy!

Help Me Help You

Like this site? Want to keep reading for free? Want to see more good reviews and helpful articles coming? You can help me for FREE!

It's extremely fast and easy. Here's how - Start your online shopping by clicking any of these links: Amazon, B&H Photo Video or Adorama. Those are the sites that I personally use to buy almost everything for years. They are proven to be safe, secure and credible.

How will this help me? When you buy your lenses or anything else from them, I got a tiny fraction of the sales which I will use for paying the maintenance cost of this site. They will also lend me more lenses to review if I hit a certain sales target. The price you pay for any item from those sites is always the same whether you use the above links or not. The only difference when you use the links is that you help me keep this site fresh, alive and FREE for you and for all readers. So, it's a win-win situation for all of us. You, me, everyone.

Please note that I always put you, my readers, as a first priority. Although I sometimes those vendors lend me lenses to review, I am always unbiased in my review. "I will be brutally honest with every review. Don't expect me to always write good stuff about the lens." That's what I told my vendors. And thankfully, they're fine with it.

Finally, you're not planning to shop, but have some extra cash to give out, consider making a small, $5 donation by clicking the "Donate" button below. This can also help paying off the maintenance cost of this site.

I hope to keep serving and helping you with your photography needs.

Many thanks for your support and thank you for reading!

Cheers,
Luke Darma
